There are two inputs that may require clarification. The first is the number of years you expect to support your expenses—in other words, the time horizon over which you will need to cover the expenditures you enter.

The second relates to an important concept in finance called the time value of money, which reflects the idea that money today is worth more than money in the future. In this calculator, it represents the estimated return you expect to generate from your savings or assets.
